Slowing of age-dependent cognitive decline in the dog by a combination of antioxidant enriched food and behavioral enrichment.
The January 2005 issue of the Neurobiology of Aging has just published findings authored by N.W. Milgram, et al. indicating that age-dependent cognitive decline can be slowed by an intervention that combines dietary enrichment and behavioral enrichment. A synopsis was published on Tuesday, Jan 25th by the New York Times.

Canine neuropsychological tests successfully applied in down's syndrome research
Down's syndrome adults have an exceptionally high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, their cognitive capabilities are difficult to assess because of impaired communication skills. To address this issue, Dr. Linda Nelson of the University of California at Irvine has modified tests developed to assess canine cognitive aging, thus providing a nonverbal protocol for assessing cognitive function. On June 30th, at the 9th annual canine cognition meeting, Dr. Nelson reported that Down's syndrome patients are highly motivated to perform the tasks, and show age-dependent decline in object memory tasks. By contrast, object discrimination learning was acquired rapidly, and did not show age differences. These results parallel age-dependent changes in dogs and further validate the canine model of cognitive aging.
Impaired mitochondrial function is linked to canine brain aging and is partially reversible by antioxidants
Mitochondria are organelles that supply cells with energy, but in doing so also produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). These molecules can damage other intracellular compounds, leading cellular dysfunction,. Dr. At the 9th annual Canine Cognition Meeting, Dr. Patrick Sullivan of the University of Kentucky reported, impaired mitochondrial function in aged dogs. He found that mitochondrial production of ROS was significantly increased in aged dogs, when compared to young. These data indicate compromised mitochondiral bioenergetics as a function of age. However, the effect can be partly attenuated by selective dietary supplementation. Significant improvement in mitochondrial function, when compared to controls, was found in a group of aged dogs maintained on a specially formulated food enriched in antioxidants and mitochondrial cofactors for over two years.
Antioxidant diet reduces brain pathology in aged beagles
Elizabeth Head and collaborators studied beta amyloid pathology in aged beagle dogs that were maintained for over two years on either control food or food enriched with antioxidants and mitochondrial cofactors. The animals maintained on the high antioxidant diet showed less beta amyloid accumulation in three different brain regions: the parietal lobes, the entorhinal cortex, and the occipital cortex. These findings indicate that oxidative stress has a causal role in the development of beta amyloid pathology, and that this development is slowed by nutritional supplementation.
